5-Axis CNC Machined PMMA Automotive Concept Model
A custom automotive concept model machined directly from PMMA using 5-axis CNC technology. The model features continuous freeform body surfaces, detailed exterior contours, and an as-machined translucent appearance, with a specified tolerance of ±0.005 mm for critical features.
This custom automotive concept model was manufactured directly from PMMA (acrylic) using 5-axis CNC machining. The model features a sculpted vehicle body with continuous freeform surfaces, defined window outlines, wheel arches, and detailed exterior contours.
Unlike components produced through injection molding, this concept model was machined directly from a larger PMMA workpiece. The intermediate manufacturing stage shows the vehicle geometry taking shape within the surrounding material before the final model was separated.
The project involved complex three-dimensional surface machining, with a specified tolerance of ±0.005 mm for critical features. The finished model retains a translucent, as-machined surface appearance without an additional polishing or coating process.
Manufacturing Process
Initial Body Contour Machining
The manufacturing process began with 5-axis CNC machining of the PMMA workpiece to form the main vehicle geometry.
The intermediate-stage photograph shows the roofline, hood, side surfaces, and overall body profile already defined, while the surrounding material remains attached to the workpiece.

This stage establishes the primary three-dimensional shape for further machining of the exterior contours and details.
Freeform Surface Machining
The automotive body incorporates multiple curved surfaces with continuously changing orientations.
Five-axis CNC machining allows the cutting tool to approach these surfaces from different orientations, supporting the machining of complex contours across the hood, roof, side panels, and rear body.
The primary machining consideration was reproducing the intended surface geometry while maintaining the relationships between adjoining contours.
Exterior Detail Machining
In addition to the main body shape, the model includes recognizable exterior features such as window outlines, wheel arches, and subtle body transitions.
These localized features introduce additional geometric detail within the larger curved surfaces. Their definition requires attention to tool accessibility and the transitions between adjacent surfaces.
Final Profile and Surface Condition
The completed model was separated from the surrounding PMMA material to obtain its standalone automotive shape.
The finished component retains an as-machined surface condition, giving it a translucent appearance with visible surface texture.
Key Manufacturing Considerations
Complex Freeform Geometry
The main challenge in this project was machining the automotive body's continuously changing three-dimensional surfaces.
Unlike simple planar or cylindrical components, the concept model contains numerous curved transitions that define its overall appearance. Maintaining the intended surface relationships is an important consideration when planning the machining strategy.
Critical Feature Accuracy
A dimensional tolerance of ±0.005 mm was specified for critical features of the concept model.
This requirement applies to designated features rather than the entire freeform body. The relevant dimensions and inspection criteria are determined by the customer's engineering drawings.
PMMA Surface Characteristics
PMMA is a thermoplastic material whose visual appearance is influenced by the surface condition produced during machining.
The model retains an as-machined finish, presenting a translucent appearance rather than a fully polished, optically clear surface.
Detailed Exterior Contours
Smaller features such as window outlines, wheel-arch profiles, and transitions between body sections contribute to the model's visual definition.
Their geometry must be considered alongside the larger body surfaces during machining.
